Capturing Truth in Treacherous Terrain
Argalian Pictures’ core team undertook a critical challenge for a commissioned work from another label, where Argalian Pictures’ in-house team managed (script, shoot & edit) a feature-length documentary on the Eastern Rajasthan Canal Project (ERCP). Tasked with spotlighting the severe water crisis affecting 13 districts in Eastern Rajasthan, the project required a nuanced narrative, while supporting end client’s political objectives by illustrating the ERCP’s significance and the consequences of its delays.
The ERCP issue, a complex hydro-political initiative involving Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh, proposed transferring surplus monsoon water to parched areas but faced delays due to political friction. The documentary needed to address these sensitivities with impartiality while covering diverse and challenging terrains within a tight two-week filming schedule.
For this ambitious project,the Producer Renu Negi from R. N. Production(Production label) commissioned Susheel Mehta and his team at Argalian Pictures for excuting the entire work. An award-winning director known for his expertise in filming in demanding environments, he quickly assembled a capable and responsive team, adept at individual responsibilities and teamwork. Concurrently, Argalian Pictures’ in-house writing team, led by Sumati Mehta, undertook extensive research on Rajasthan’s hydro-politics and water crisis. The writer’s ability to blend hard facts with heartfelt storytelling successfully transformed a complex issue into a gripping story.The result was a highly gripping feature length documentary script titled “Chambal Ki Chitthi” that became the voice of the common man, ensuring a balanced, impactful documentary that deeply resonated with audiences.
On-ground filming presented its own formidable challenges—scorching temperatures, scarce drinkable water, and navigating the treacherous Chambal ravines, notorious for dacoits. Director Sushjeel Mehta’s expertise was pivotal, who meticulously devised an efficient itinerary and shooting blueprint for smooth workflow.His exceptional cinematography,and the ability to capture raw and poignant human emotions with stunning visuals helped the production crew to gather some really soul-stirring stories of people from that region.Argalian Pictures team’s resilience led to the successful capture of compelling stories from affected communities and interviews with key stakeholders. The meticulous post-production process, also managed by Susheel Mehta himself , refined the extensive footage into a cohesive, impactful documentary.
Premiered in Rajasthan, the documentary not only significantly raised public awareness and advanced discussions on water policy, but also enhanced the client’s political visibility. This documentary project demonstrated Argalian Pictures’ ability to deliver high-quality work even in challenging conditions, showcasing their expertise in handling complex socio-political issues with integrity and sensitivity.
